Hello and thanks for visiting my page! My name is Flora and I have been working as a freelance English Italian translator and all-round language specialist since 2012.
Before becoming a freelancer, for several years I worked as an in-house translator and language specialist in Symantec, a global company leader in cyber security, and before that in Lexmark, a company specialised in enterprise software and hardware solutions.
While working in-house, I acquired extensive experience and developed deep insights on all the linguistic aspects of the localisation process, from terminology harvesting and translation, to linguistic reviews, MT post-editing and SEO. I also learned a lot from colleagues and mentors and availed of any training opportunities to refine my translation skills and understanding of technology. No CAT tool scares me and I enjoy learning new tools and applications.
I haven’t always been a localisation geek though. In fact, my first love is literature, which is the subject I studied at University. After graduating with a Honours degree in Arts majoring in Italian language and literature at the University of Pisa, Italy, I became interested in translation and achieved the postgraduate Diploma in Translation offered by the Chartered Institute of Linguists.
Subsequently I attended several workshops on translating literature, travel and tourism content, journalism and even historical romances, held by STL Formazione and Langue Parole.
Over the years I feel I have acquired an ideal mix of technical and literary/writing skills which I can rely on, but I am well aware that you never stop learning.
Although until now I have mainly worked as a technical translator, in the future I would also love to take on literary translation projects. Maybe one day I will translate a not so well known but nevertheless fundamental classic novel!
As a first project I have completed the translation of a Gothic short story that has been included in an e-book collection. It is a project whose proceeds will be donated to the charity organization Translators without Borders. You can find more details and information on this project and e-book here (in Italian).
I have mainly been based in Dublin since 1999, with frequent visits to Italy, my home country, and several visits to the nearby UK. Having lived for many years in an English-speaking country while working for American companies, I can offer a strong understanding of the cultures I have been immersed in for so long.
